Subject: Geography

Description

An instrument for measuring atmospheric pressure. There are two types, the mercury barometer and the aneroid barometer. The mercury barometer consists of a glass tube containing mercury which fluctuates in height as pressure varies. The aneroid barometer is a small metal box from which some of the air has been removed. The box expands and contracts as the air pressure changes. A series of levers joined to a pointer shows pressure on a dial.
