Colligative Properties

Subject: Chemistry

Book: General Chemistry

Colligative properties, including freezing point depression, boiling point elevation, vapor pressure lowering, and osmotic pressure, depend on the number of solute particles rather than their identity. For instance, dissolving salt in water lowers the freezing point, which is why salt is used on icy roads. These properties are quantitatively described by equations relating changes in temperature or pressure to solute concentration (in molality).
