How to Calculate the Median of a Data Set

Subject: Mathematics

Book: Maths Mastery

The median is a central value that splits a dataset into two halves, particularly useful when outliers could distort the mean. To find the median, arrange the numbers in ascending order and identify the middle. If there is an odd count of values, the median is the central one; if even, it is the average of the two central values. For instance, in [3, 8, 12, 20, 25], the middle is 12, so the median = 12. In an even case like [2, 5, 7, 11], you take (5 + 7) ÷ 2 = 6. The median helps you gauge typical values in income distributions, housing prices, and exam scores, making it a critical measure for balanced data interpretation.
