National Human Rights Commission (NHRC)

Subject: Polity

Book: Indian Polity by M. Laxmikanth

A statutory body (1993 Act) ensuring the protection and promotion of human rights enshrined in the Constitution or international covenants. Composed of a Chairperson (ex-Chief Justice of India) and members with expertise in human rights. NHRC investigates complaints of rights violations by public officials, recommending actions or relief to victims. While it can summon witnesses and documents, it cannot enforce its decisions directly, relying on moral authority. It also undertakes research, awareness campaigns, and advises on legislative reforms. Critics cite inadequate follow-up by governments, but the NHRC remains central in highlighting custodial violence, child labor, and atrocities against marginalized sections.
